Just some random tidbits that might be of interest to our bankers this week!

Another short update today as I’m on the road, headed to the Shangri-La Resort in Northeast Oklahoma for a lunch version of our Bankers’ Night Out today. Then, we’ll move toward Tulsa for a regular Bankers’ Night Out there this evening. We’ll have some special guests at some of these events as candidates for office will join us and share their visions with the bankers in attendance.

I hope to see you at one! Oklahoma City’s is Wednesday night, while Ardmore and Krebs are next week! Get signed up!

Well, I guess we’re on to baseball and softball season in the Cornhusker State. Luckily, both are having outstanding seasons with each sitting near the top  of the conference standings with identical 11-1 Big 10 records! Could make for a fun spring and — hopefully — early summer!

CFPB releases consumer complaint totals for 2025

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau received more than 6.6 million complaints in 2025, according to the bureau’s annual report on consumer complaint responses.

Banks and other financial companies responded to more than 99% of complaints in a timely manner.

The CFPB noted that the number of consumer complaints it received has doubled nearly every year in recent years. For example, it received nearly 3.2 million complaints in 2024, and 1.6 million complaints the year before that.

Of the 6.6 million complaints the bureau received last year, 90% were sent to companies for review and response, 3% were referred to other regulatory agencies, and 7% were found to be not actionable.

The CFPB sent complaints to more than 4,000 companies for review and response in 2025, according to the report. Companies confirmed a commercial relationship with the complainant and closed the matter with explanation or relief to approximately 5.4 million complaints.

OBA education corner …

Has everyone been following the Artemis II mission and humanity’s return to the Moon? Tying into last week’s note about “Project Hail Mary” let’s hear it for mission control and a little touch of our favorite alien from that movie in its recent communication with the astronauts. Also, don’t forget to keep up with what’s happening on the continuing education front, including the following:

  • Advanced Commercial Lending Workshops, April 10-Advanced Cash Flow Analysis; May 1-Advanced Tax Analysis for the Banker, Oklahoma City — These seminars will explore multiple models of both business and personal (business owner) cash flow analyses as well as provide attendees with several advanced tax-return concepts and related analyses to help them more effectively work with their business customers.
  • Lending Basics for Bank Managers and Support Personnel, April 27, webinar — The webinar will cover the basics of the three main areas of lending: consumer, mortgage and commercial lending. Each of the three areas will be illustrated with real life case studies, including cash flow analysis.
  • Basic Bankruptcy for Bankers, April 28, webinar — Every banker should have a fundamental understanding of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code and your bank’s rights and obligations under it.
  • Demystifying Trusts: Establishing Deposit Accounts and Loans, April 29, webinar — This webinar will provide attendees with information on doing business with trusts, including best practices in establishing deposit account and loan relationships.
