Just some random tidbits that might be of interest to our bankers this week!

I know it’s been two full weeks since the runoff elections, but I’m still enjoying exploration into the hows and whys behind the winners and losers. I came across some really interesting county-by-county data I’ll be sharing in this month’s Oklahoma Banker newspaper, which Jeremy promises should be hitting banks either at the end of this week or the beginning of next!

Speaking of politics, the U.S. House announced last week it will not schedule any votes during the final two weeks of September. This is to allow members to campaign for the upcoming midterm elections.

While understandable from the elections standpoint, it could back things up a bit on the docket. It’s something to keep an eye on.

We have a nice little event scheduled on Wednesday at the Bricktown Ballpark. Sure, the weather will be warm, but we should all be used to that by now! I encourage our bankers to take advantage of the chance to get some fraud information, and enjoy a hot dog and an afternoon with the boys of summer! Check out the story below for more info!

From the boys of summer to the boys of fall … college football seasons started in earnest last weekend and it was an OK beginning for my ‘Huskers. They had some real trouble with Ohio early, but ended up posting a blowout. To paraphrase Bill Belichick, we’re on to Bowling Green next week.

OBA, state bankers associations, support FCC proposal to help stop illegal calls

Fifty-two state bankers associations, including the OBA, expressed strong support for the Federal Communications Commission’s proposals to ensure that all voice service providers in the path of a call take meaningful responsibility for keeping illegal calls off the U.S. calling network, in a letter sent to the FCC last week.

In the letter, the associations expressed support for the FCC’s proposal to require originating providers to “know their customer” – i.e., to collect specific information about a prospective customer – before that customer may originate calls on the provider’s network.

The letter also expressed support for the FCC’s proposal to specify the criteria that originating providers must satisfy before providing an “attestation” to a call under the “STIR/SHAKEN” call authentication framework. When an originating provider improperly provides an “A-level” attestation to a call – the highest form of attestation available – it may lead a terminating provider to apply a green “checkmark” or other signal indicating (falsely) the number is not illegally spoofed.

The letter adds the OBA and other state associations’ voices to the growing number of banking and other financial trade associations expressing support for stronger FCC rules to combat illegal calls that impersonate banks and other legitimate businesses.

OBA education corner …

The weather might not agree, but summer has sorta ended. Labor Day weekend is usually considered the unofficial end of summer, and, on top of that, Sept. 1 is the beginning of “meteorological autumn.” I guess we still have that darned autumn equinox on Sept. 23 that marks the OFFICIAL end of summer. Whatever. We’re ready for it to end now. Go play some “Boys of Summer” by Don Henley, break out the pumpkin spice and make sure to keep up with what’s happening on the continuing education front, including the following:

  • Elder Financial Exploitation Program — Policy, Procedures and Referrals, Sept. 17, webinar — The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network is issuing this advisory to alert financial institutions to the rising trend of Elder Financial Exploitation targeting older adults and to highlight new EFE typologies and red flags since FinCEN issued the first EFE Advisory in 2011.
  • Top 10 IT Audit Recommendations for 2026, Sept. 18, webinar — In this session, we’ll share the 10 most frequently recommended IT Audit findings over the past year, and how your organization can leverage these findings to get ahead of your next IT audit.
  • Cryptocurrency Workshop, Sept. 23, webinar — It is essential for community banks, no matter the size, to understand the crypto economy, the illicit typologies and have open-source tools in hand to investigate when needed.
  • HELOC Compliance Deep Dive: Disclosures, Docs and More, Sept. 23, webinar — This training provides bank staff with the knowledge needed to identify key HELOC compliance requirements, recognize potential risks and apply regulatory expectations for HELOCs.
  • Intro to Commercial Lending Seminar, Sept. 24, Oklahoma City — This seminar covers the basics of commercial lending and is a must for all new commercial lenders and/or those individuals who want to explore this vital discipline.
  • 2026 OBA Consumer Lending School, Oct. 5-9, Oklahoma City — Consumer credit is one of the highest profile and most diverse operations in a bank. Specialists in the field need knowledge that runs both broad and deep.
