I’m excited for the unique opportunity we have for our member banks next week when we’ll host Oklahoma gubernatorial candidate Gentner Drummond on a Zoom meeting on the morning of Aug. 18! We’re also hoping to get the other Republican candidate in the runoff, Mike Mazzei, whom we’ve contacted and is working to make it fit his schedule. Regardless if its just Drummond or both Republican candidates, I do hope you’ll take advantage of this opportunity.
Please email me (adrian@oba.com) to RSVP to attend the Zoom, and I’ll reply back with the link info!

I’ve shared similar articles in the past, but I’m always fascinated when two of my passions – sports and banking – interconnect. An article in the ABA Banking Journal on Monday explored how banks are adapting to the financial needs of college athletes, professionals and the entire industry around both. I found it really interesting and wanted to share!

Speaking of sports, my Cubbies are hanging in there and, in fact, just SWEPT a series from the big, bad Dodgers! My ChiCubs are set up well to make the playoffs, so it should make for an interesting autumn with college football AND playoff baseball on my ledger!
I hope I didn’t just jinx them …
FDIC reworks review process for deposit insurance applications
The FDIC today announced a new, two-phase process for deposit insurance applications meant to speed up agency reviews and encourage de novo bank formation.
According to an FDIC statement, de novo applicants that meet certain conditions will get contingent authorization within 120 days of the agency receiving the application. Applicants will then be eligible for full approval within the subsequent 12 months, as long as they provide additional information and complete key organizational steps.
The two-step approval process is meant to provide groups forming banks with more clarity before they spend more time raising capital, hiring staff and establishing the infrastructure needed to launch a new institution, the FDIC said. The agency expects most applicants will be able to file applications concurrently with the FDIC and chartering authority.
OBA Emerging Leaders Academy taking applications
Take note the OBA 2026-27 Emerging Leaders Academy is currently accepting applications. We’re looking for the best and brightest bankers who seek to sharpen their leadership skills.
There are six sessions to the Academy: Nov. 4, Dec. 8, Jan. 22, Feb. 24, March 25, April 29. Each session delivers takeaways that can be implemented immediately. Graduation will take place in May 2027 at the OBA Annual Convention.
Academy applicants should be able to demonstrate an increasing level of responsibility, potential for continuing to play a leadership role in Oklahoma banking and a desire to further their careers and grow professionally. A panel of bankers will review the applicants and choose those accepted into the Academy (maximum 30 bankers).
Click here to apply! The application deadline is Sept. 25. For more information, please contact Megan McGuire at megan@oba.com or (405) 424-5252.

OBA education corner …
Jack Ingram is one artist who gets lost in the all big names of Texas/Red Dirt music over the past couple of decades. Everyone knows Pat Green, the Eli Young Band, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Luke Bryan, but Ingram has been releasing music since the late 1990s. His album, “Hey You,” is an overlooked classic in the genre. After a brief sojourn in Nashville, he returned with “Midnight Motel” in 2016. Go check out some of his songs, thank us later, and then make sure to keep up with what’s happening on the continuing education front, including the following:
- Community Bank HMDA Workshop, Aug. 18, webinar — How does your community bank handle HMDA data reporting?
- AI 101: What You Need to Know About AI and Banking Today, Aug. 21, webinar — The use of artificial intelligence over the next few years is poised to revolutionize not only our society as a whole, but the banking industry in particular.
- Treasury Management: A Powerful Tool to Increase Deposits and Fee Income, Aug. 27, webinar — Unlock the potential of Treasury Management with a basic yet comprehensive course designed to elevate your financial institution’s success.
- 2026 Supervisor Bootcamp, Sept. 2-Tulsa; Sept. 3-Oklahoma City — Whether you are new or seasoned managers and supervisors, attendees find this experiential training invigorating, motivating and applicable to managing and supervising others.
- 2026 OBA Basic Banking School, Sept. 14-17, Oklahoma City — The school is designed to introduce students to basic banking concepts as they relate to the overall functioning of a bank.
- Intro to Commercial Lending Seminar, Sept. 24, Oklahoma City — This seminar covers the basics of commercial lending and is a must for all new commercial lenders and/or those individuals who want to explore this vital discipline.
- 2026 OBA Consumer Lending School, Oct. 5-9, Oklahoma City — Consumer credit is one of the highest profile and most diverse operations in a bank. Specialists in the field need knowledge that runs both broad and deep.
