Just some random tidbits that might be of interest to our bankers this week!

I’ve been incredibly saddened to hear about the devastation in Texas from the recent flash floods. Our friends at the Texas Bankers Association have created a donations page to aid Texas flood victims.

Individuals, banks or groups can contribute directly on the foundation donation page. Foundation Director Jocelyn Carby is available to answer banker questions about donations and the foundation’s relief efforts.

On a much lighter note, a banker friend of mine has undertaken a neat little project: he’s collecting counter checks (temporary checks without names or addresses – just bank name and logo) from as many different banks in the state, both active and defunct, as possible. His hobby has intrigued me and I told him I would help out, if I could. So, whenever I drop by your bank on my coming visits over the next few months, I’d sure appreciate if you could spare one of these counter checks for his project!

The Cubs keep chugging along, leading their division by more than three games and holding the second-best record in the National League. I wasn’t expecting to have a pennant chase to fill my summer, that’s for sure!

FDIC report shows institutions overwhelmingly rated well in consumer compliance

The FDIC last week released the 2025 edition of its “Consumer Compliance Supervisory Highlights.” The report includes a summary of the overall consumer compliance performance for FDIC-supervised institutions in 2024, a description of the most frequently cited violations, and an overview of consumer complaint trends.

The last report was issued in spring 2024.

In 2024, the FDIC conducted approximately 800 consumer compliance examinations, the agency said in the report. The FDIC uses the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council’s Uniform Interagency Consumer Compliance Rating System to evaluate supervised institutions’ adherence to consumer protection laws and regulations. As of Dec. 31, 2024, 97% of all FDIC-supervised institutions were rated satisfactory or better for consumer compliance (i.e., ratings of 1 or 2), and 97% were rated “outstanding” or “satisfactory” for the Community Reinvestment Act.

OBA education corner …

Does anyone else miss 1990s-era country music like we do around here? If you can answer “yes” to this, we highly encourage you to check out the songs of Zach Top. Putting Top’s album on your playlist would be like if 1994 materialized as musical notes and started emanating from your speakers. From his big hit, I Never Lie, to his best song, Use Me, Top is a throwback to when country music wore boots and big hats. While downloading Top into your playlists, keep up to date with what’s happening on the continuing education front, including the following:

  • BSA/AML Training for Staff, July 15, webinar — This year has brought many new issues for the BSA team as beneficial ownership rules continue to drop out in increments.
  • The Right of Setoff: What Financial Institutions Need to Know, July 17, webinar — The right of setoff is a complicated, but very effective, tool for collecting debts owed to a financial institution. Learn the best practices and dangers that can arise when using this process.
  • Hot Topics in the IT Examinations, July 18, webinar — Attend this session to understand the hot topics that examiners are looking for in technology and security.
  • Opening Trust Accounts, July 22, webinar — When opening these special accounts, you need to know about proper documentation, CIP and signature card responsibilities.
  • 2025 HMDA Checkup: All-Day Streaming, July 23, webinar — There are more than a few tripwires and tricky data points to keep track of, and that requires a detailed and consistent process to ensure the right information is collected and submitted every time.
  • 2025 OBA Compliance School, Aug. 18-22, Oklahoma City — This school is designed to provide an extensive body of knowledge and information on consumer compliance that can contribute to the development of compliance officers and to their associated functions, both of which have become an integral and essential part of our banking industry.
