Employment report shows 266,000 jobs added in April

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released an employment report for the month of April. Total non-farm payroll employment rose by 266,000, and the unemployment rate rose to 6.1 percent, with unemployed persons at 9.8 million.

The leisure and hospitality industry saw the greatest employment growth with an increase of 331,000, as pandemic-related restrictions eased in some parts of the country, with more than half of the increase in food and beverage service locations. Despite this growth, employment in the leisure and hospitality is still down by 2.8 million since February 2020.

The employment-population ratio did not change much in April at 57.9 percent, but is up 9.5 percentage point since December 2020, and down 3.2 percentage points since February 2020.
